* M10.20: plan Unicode text for OCR output in Type3 faces (fonts, edit)
OCR output used to flatten every character beyond WinAnsi to a silent `?`. This
adds the two pieces that let the OCR layers write the recognized words as they
are; the OCR code that uses them follows in M10.21.
pdfcraft-fonts
- `TextPlan::for_words` maps each word to the standard Helvetica when WinAnsi
covers it, else to Type3 fonts drawn from the craft-fonts faces (the Japanese
document face first, then the rest of the build input). Characters no face
has a glyph for are counted (`missing`), never dropped silently. At most 240
characters per font and 2400 per plan, so one hostile word cannot balloon.
- Which face has which character is asked once per (face, character) for a plan,
not once per word.
- `face_has`, `craft_glyph`, `win_ansi_char`, `fits_win_ansi` are public for it.
pdfcraft-edit
- `add_type3_fonts` / `stamp_with_fonts` register a plan's fonts on a page under
a free `PCOcr`, `PCOcr1`, ... name, build each font once and share the object
with later pages. A shared face is registered under a free name on a later
page that already has a font of the name it was given first, instead of
replacing that page's own font.
- The fonts carry real advances and a ToUnicode CMap, so extraction reads the
text back.
pdfcraft-redact
- A test shows a hand-built Type3 text layer (the shape the OCR output writes) is
redacted like any other text and the verifier passes.
Tests: pdfcraft-fonts 62 passed, pdfcraft-edit 129 passed, pdfcraft-redact 33
passed; clippy -D warnings clean on the three crates. The name-reuse and the
redaction tests build their fonts by hand, so they run without the craft-fonts
build input; the tests that plan real faces skip without it and were not run in
this commit's own check.
* M12: give the hostile-XFA open test more room on a loaded machine
The test opens a form whose calculate script sets a value 50 000 times, against
the one-second budget of an unasked script and a five-second wall-clock bound
on the open. Both sit close to what a machine running several suites at once
can take, so the test can fail without anything being wrong.
It now runs 20 000 iterations (the total is 19999) and allows 30 seconds, which
still fails for a script that hangs or is not capped. Test-only; unrelated to
the OCR work in this series, so it is a commit of its own.
Tests: both hostile_xfa tests in pdfcraft-engine pass.
* M10.21: pluggable OCR engines, preprocessing, review sessions and the OCR tools (ocr, engine, create, automation)
Scan & OCR gets a second engine, optional raster clean-up, a review step before
anything is applied, editable output and a batch mode, headlessly first: the
interface for them follows in M10.22.
pdfcraft-ocr
- A `Recognizer` trait with two engines: the built-in ocrs (moved out of lib.rs)
and the installed tesseract program, run as a fenced external process: fixed
argv, allow-listed language codes, a private temp directory (mode 0700 on
Unix), 120 s timeout, 64 MiB output cap, 50 000-word reading cap. A location
from PDFCRAFT_TESSERACT is validated (absolute, existing, executable) and an
invalid one fails closed instead of falling back to the PATH. `--list-langs`
and `--version` are read from stdout or, for older versions, stderr.
- Strategies: PrimaryOnly, ConfidenceWeighted (the second engine joins when the
first reading's mean is under 70 or unknown) and a ROVER merge (higher
confidence wins per word; against an ocrs word of unknown confidence a
tesseract word wins only at 70 or more; capped at 100 M comparisons; a failing
partner degrades to the primary with a note).
- Preprocessing: opt-in auto-rotate, deskew, denoise and binarize on the RGBA
raster, each with an exact inverse so word boxes map back to the scan. The
300 dpi normalization the steps are calibrated for runs only when a step is
on: with every step off the render is read as rendered, as before. (Enlarging
a 72 dpi render 4x on its own made the models read "due: €250" as "ue: ?250".)
`OcrImage` is validated by construction (side and 64 MP area caps, checked
before any buffer is allocated, including by the resize).
- Confidence bands (High >= 90, Medium 70-89, Low < 70) drive review.
pdfcraft-engine, pdfcraft-create
- `OcrSettings` gains engine, strategy, the four steps, output mode, region, the
skip flags and the low-confidence threshold; Automatic reads confidence
weighted unless a strategy is chosen.
- A recognition is a session: the document guard refuses a stale result with its
reason, pages can be applied one at a time (the guard is taken again after each
applied page), and applying is one undoable step. A per-language dictionary
(a plain-text file: words added from any document stay on disk after it closes).
- Output is searchable (an invisible layer) or a NEW editable document of visible
text at the recognized boxes (`create::from_contents`); words beyond WinAnsi use
the Type3 faces of M10.20 in both, with the shared plan across pages.
- Engine discovery never blocks the interface: results are cached, a stale
answer is shown while a background probe retries, and the models search and
`--version` are cached. Batch: pages or files that already have text are
skipped unless forced, and inputs sharing a file name are found up front.
pdfcraft-automation
- ocr_recognize (engine, strategy, steps, region, output mode), ocr_words (with a
retained review handle), ocr_review_apply, ocr_dictionary, ocr_status and
ocr_recognize_files. The editable `out` must be a new file inside --root and is
refused for a searchable run (it used to be ignored), two batch inputs of one
file name are refused before anything is read, and the batch folder is checked
for existing outputs.
pdfcraft-ui-egui
- Only what the new API needs: the Recognize Text dialog reads with
`recognizers(&settings)`. `ocr.correct` is registered with its label in every
catalog; the screen itself is M10.22.
Tests: pdfcraft-ocr 78 passed; pdfcraft-create passed; pdfcraft-engine and
pdfcraft-automation 450 passed and 1 failed (the automation lib 17, automation.rs
157, hostile_args 2 among them); pdfcraft-ui-egui lib + ocr + control tests 391
passed; clippy -D warnings clean on the five crates. The one failure is in a
test this commit does not change:
recognize_text_makes_a_scanned_page_searchable fails where the models are
installed (they read "quick" as "auick" at that render size); the roadmap on main
already records it. The real tesseract binary ran in
tesseract::tests::recognize_runs_the_installed_binary (tesseract 5.4.0, PATH).
* M10.22: OCR Verify screen, the Recognize Text options and the interface catalogs (ui-egui)
Scan & OCR ▸ Correct recognized text: a full-window screen where a recognition
is reviewed before anything is applied, plus the dialog and batch options for
the engines of M10.21.
OCR Verify screen
- Four panes: the page list, the source page with confidence-coloured word boxes
(click to select, drag to draw a region), the recognized text, and a zoom plus
word inspector. Corrections commit on Enter (an empty commit removes the word),
Remove/Restore, "+ Dictionary" (a per-language file in the preferences folder,
so a word added from a document stays on disk after it closes), per-word and
per-page Verified, F8 / Shift+F8 walk the low-confidence words, Ctrl+T marks the
page reviewed, Ctrl+Tab moves the pane focus, and review edits undo within the
panel.
- Re-OCR of the whole page or a drawn region. A region re-read moves the review
marks of the words it keeps to their new positions and selects the first new
word; a whole-page re-read clears that page's marks (and the undo brings them
back). The region outline is scaled onto the pane, not mapped through user
space again, so it is right on rotated and cropped pages.
- Accept / Reject per page or whole. Pages accepted one at a time each apply once
(the document guard is taken again after each applied page; an edit made
elsewhere in between is still refused with its reason), and Accept in
searchable mode is one undoable step. Editable mode writes a NEW
`<name>_ocr.pdf` through a save dialog and never the source. A real Cancel
keeps the pages already read.
- The engine and strategy menus disable a choice that cannot run and say why;
the check never waits on a process (a background probe fills a cache), and
choosing Automatic moves "Primary only" to Confidence weighted.
Recognize Text dialog and batch
- Engine, strategy, the four clean-up steps and the skip flags are remembered with
the other choices (a saved Automatic without a strategy reads confidence
weighted). The batch refuses two inputs of one file name and existing outputs
before reading anything, notes low-confidence pages at the settings' threshold,
and its toast has a Cancel (the file in flight finishes).
Catalogs and attribution
- The 90 new interface strings are in all 21 catalogs (the Lithuanian ones were
written without native review, and the Bulgarian ones avoid U+045D, which the
bundled monospace face lacks). ATTRIBUTION.toml carries the new hashes, a
note on the Lithuanian entries and the README screenshot; ATTRIBUTION.md is
regenerated.
- README: a screenshot of the Verify screen, taken with
`cargo xtask screenshots` from a synthetic scan (`shot --ocr-verify on`) built
from allowed assets; the page reads it with the real engines.
Tests: pdfcraft-ui-egui lib 373 passed (1 ignored: the Windows hinting
measurement probe), tests ocr 6, control 46, fonts 9; clippy -D warnings clean on
the engine, ui-egui, pdfcraft and xtask packages; `cargo xtask assets` ok. The
review state machine has unit tests for every fix above; each was seen failing
with its fix reverted.
* M10.23: parity entries, roadmap and localization notes for the OCR workflow
Records what M10.20-M10.22 ship, and what they do not.
parity/acrobat-features.toml
- Status changes against main: ocr.rotation-detection and ocr.deskew planned ->
shipped (the opt-in steps of M10.21, with their tests); ocr.correct-recognized-
text and ocr.ocr-engines planned -> partial. Other Area I entries get their
evidence and notes brought up to date.
- ocr.correct-recognized-text: the evidence includes the one-page-at-a-time accept
and the region re-read tests; the notes say what the headless tools cover
(ocr_words with a retained review, ocr_review_apply through the same stale-
document guard, ocr_dictionary) and what is still UI-only (suggestions,
per-word Verified marks, region re-reads).
- ocr.ocr-engines stays partial rather than shipped: part of its evidence is
conditional (the real-binary test runs only where tesseract is installed and
skips elsewhere, and the process-level tests are Unix-only). It cites the tests
that always run (location validation and the fail-closed rule, --list-langs
parsing from stdout or stderr, the merge rules, the default strategy) and says
which part is not proven everywhere.
- `cargo xtask parity`: area I 32.7% -> 44.2% weighted (5 -> 7 shipped, 7 -> 9
partial); overall 52.8% -> 53.0% shipped and 58.2% -> 58.5% weighted.
ROADMAP.md
- One progress-log entry (2026-10-13, newest first) and the banner line. It says
the catalogs are 21 with the Lithuanian additions not natively reviewed, that
the end-to-end redaction test of the Type3 layer needs the craft-fonts build
input, and that recognize_text_makes_a_scanned_page_searchable still fails where
the models are installed, as main's log already records.
docs/localization.md, docs/localization-parity.md
- The Lithuanian entry count (2,578 -> 2,668) and the counts of the other
catalogs that carry entry counts are re-measured with the 90 new entries; the
Lithuanian OCR entries are marked as not natively reviewed.
Checked: `cargo xtask parity` (numbers above, evidence tests exist) and
`cargo xtask assets` pass on this tree.
* M10.24: ocr: apply a late result only to the document it was read from
The Recognize Text dialog closes on Go, so the document can be edited, or have
text redacted, while a long run is still reading. The result was applied
without the stale check the tools and the Verify screen use, so words read
before a redaction could be written back as invisible text. The run now keeps
its guard and applies through the checked path.
Accept with the editable output in the Verify screen had the same gap (Exit
keeps the review open): it now refuses when the document changed since the
review started.
Both new tests fail with their guard switched off.
* M10.25: ocr: ocr_dictionary takes dictionary file names only
Updating sorts, lower-cases and rewrites the file it is given, so pointed at
.env or a README it would corrupt it. The tool now accepts only
ocr-dictionary-<language>.txt style names, for reading as well as writing.
The size-limit test used a file name the rule now refuses first, so it renamed
its fixture to keep testing the size limit. The new test fails with the rule
switched off.
* M10.26: pt-BR: keep (s) on the word counts and say mecanismo for engine
Two review fixes from a native speaker: the two word(s) lines had lost their
(s), so a count of 1 read as 1 palavras, and engine was translated both as
motor and mecanismo. Mecanismo is the Brazilian word for a software engine and
two lines already used it, so the other six now match.
* M10: fit the rebased OCR workflow to current main's structure
* Fix OCR workflow issues from the review
Honor the Recognize dialog's editable-output choice: its result opens in
the review screen (whose Accept writes the editable document) instead of
an invisible layer. Make page acceptance idempotent: a second Accept
entire page never appends the OCR layer twice and keeps later
corrections. Move page and region re-OCR onto a worker thread with a
status line and a cancel that discards the reading. Skip the Tesseract
probe for jobs that name their engines. Bound Tesseract's stderr while
the child runs, not only after it exits. Surface the editable output's
substitution notes in the tools' and the run's results.
Also repair the OCR batch tool against the current structure: inputs are
held to the read root again, and a batch whose inputs share an output
name is refused before the output folder is created, compared the way
the default filesystem compares names; and the editable writer test's
word stays inside the fixture's pages.
* Apply pre-review fixes to the OCR workflow
Hold the automation OCR tools to the document's copying permission, as
the other text tools are: the recognized text is left out of the
results when copying is forbidden, and the paths that carry the words
out of the document (the editable output, the review word list) are
refused. Mark the ocr_dictionary tool as overwriting its path. Close
the searchable layer's graphics state around its invisible text so the
rendering mode cannot leak into later content. Read the OCR user
dictionary folder from the portable data folder in portable mode, like
the recovery store does. Resolve the attribution manifest's leftover
conflict markers and regenerate the generated attribution. Describe the
review flow, the searchable layer's Type3 fonts and the parity evidence
references accurately, and drop an undeclared copy of the recovery
module.

* OCR: new documents go through the page tree builder main added

* OCR: review notes and lints
The editable output refuses a file created during recognition. ocr_words takes
skip_text_pages and force_ocr. Automatic OCR checks the engine it will use. The
stderr test stays below the kill cap, and a failed --ocr-verify shot exits with
an error.

* OCR: restore the Verify screenshot attribution, follow the moved constants
The merge dropped the screenshot row with the translation rows. The model
filename constants live in ocrs.rs now, so the license check reads them there.

* Fill & Sign: a Border control for typed text, and a border colour of its own
Rebased onto main as one commit: main's Fill & Sign text colour (#2444) runs through the
same places as the border (the open box, typed(), the page input, the toolbar and the
preferences), so every step of the branch met it again. Text colour and border now travel
together as TypedLook (typed_with), which keeps typed() and the new function under Clippy's
argument limit; a border without its own colour takes the text's. Make Current Properties
Default on typed text also keeps its colour for new text now.
The branch's commits, in order:
- Typewriter text: a border change grows its box on every side, so the text keeps its place
- Fill & Sign: a Border control for typed text and dates
- Parity: the typewriter border's evidence
- i18n: the Border label in every catalog, recorded in ATTRIBUTION.toml
- Text boxes, typewriter text and callouts: a border colour of their own
- Fill & Sign: the toolbar follows the selected text; a Border colour button
- fill_sign_add and comment_edit take `border_color`
- Parity: the border colour and the toolbar following the selection
- i18n: Border colour and Same as text in every catalog, recorded in ATTRIBUTION.toml
- Typed text's border: /Border's width is read, a non-finite border colour refused, a saved Same as text restored
- Fill & Sign: the toolbar changes only the selected text; Make Current Properties Default keeps new text's border
- Review: Make Properties Default gives a text box's or callout's tool its border colour
- i18n: the new labels in the Persian catalog, recorded in ATTRIBUTION.toml
- Review: a test that dragging the Font size control resizes the selected text to where the drag ends
- Rebase: the typed text's border in main's annot and comments modules (Style's border colour, exports), and craft_ui's ComboBox

* M5: text boxes and typed text take an oval or a circle for their border
Rebased onto #4146's new head as one commit (see there: main's Fill & Sign text colour runs
through the same places). The border shape goes into TypedLook's border with the width and
colour; a circle around typed text still takes the snug box.
The branch's commits, in order:
- Text boxes and typed text take an oval or a circle for their border
- A circle goes snug around its text
- Review: fill_sign_add takes an oval or a circle only with a border
- Review: a circle made on a quarter-turned page is sized from the text as shown
- Review: Border ▸ None takes an oval or a circle away with the line
- Review: the Border colour button shows the selected text box's own colour
- i18n: Border shape in the Persian catalog, recorded in ATTRIBUTION.toml
- Review: Border ▸ None on a circled text is one undo step
- Rebase: the border shape in main's annot, engine and comments modules; craft_ui's ComboBox; Fill & Sign's border controls in a function of their own (main's complexity limit)
- Review: Thickness 0 in Comment Properties takes an oval or a circle away, as Border ▸ None does

Comments copy and paste, within and between documents. ⌘C with comments selected (and no text
selected) copies them, each with its replies, as XFDF: into the app's clipboard (every tab and
window) and as text onto the system clipboard. ⌘V, Edit ▸ Paste comments or the page's context
menu pastes them onto the current page at their own positions, as new comments under names of
their own, so nothing is replaced and pasting twice gives two sets; the copies are selected.
XFDF with comments from the system clipboard pastes too, so comments travel between processes.
pdfcraft_xfdf::export_xfdf_comments writes a selection with its replies; import_comments takes
a target page and a name prefix and imports copies (the usual import still replaces same names).
Engine: Edit::PasteComments { xfdf, page } (one undo step, comment permission) and
Session::export_comments. Tools: comments_copy (read-only) and comments_paste.
Several comments select at once: ⌘-click (Ctrl on Windows and Linux) or ⇧-click adds one or
takes it out, on the page and in the Comments panel; the one clicked last has the handles.
Delete removes them all as one step, a drag moves them together, the context menu copies them.
Connected lines, polygons and clouds finish from the right-click menu's Complete (with Undo last
point and Cancel drawing), as other editors do, besides Enter and a double-click.

* Forms: date fields name months in the date language, not always English (#5303)
`AFDate_FormatEx("dd-mmm-yy")` wrote "18-Oct-26" in an Italian interface,
where a localized Acrobat writes "18-ott-26". Form date formats,
`util.printd` and `util.scand` now take their month and weekday names
from the date language (Preferences > Date format > Language, which
follows the interface language until one is picked), and still read
English names typed in. The names are process-wide, so their test runs
in its own binary.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Forms: dates read back in every date language (#5303)
Trying every date language showed what a field wrote not always reading
back: names holding digits ("10月"), spaces ("tháng 10"), dots ("ม.ค.")
or combining vowel signs (Thai, Hindi, Telugu) fell apart word by word,
and Italian, Spanish, Romanian and Albanian share some short weekday and
month names ("mar"). The language's names are now found whole in the
text first, the longest at each place, and read as their English names;
the format's order of `mmm` and `ddd` settles a shared name. Both
AFDate parsing and util.scand do this, on text up to 1 KB. A test reads
back every language, each name format, and hostile text.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Forms: date names no field font can draw are drawn in English (#5303)
With the names in the date language, a Russian dd-mmm-yy field drawn in
Helvetica showed "18-????.-26": no /DR font held "окт." and the WinAnsi
stand-in drew each letter as ?. The same held for Japanese, Chinese,
Greek, Arabic, Thai and others, and for Latin names outside WinAnsi
(Czech "říj"). Before, the names were English and always drew. An
AFDate/AFTime field now formats its value again with English names for
a widget whose fonts can't draw the localized text; a custom Format
script is run again with util.printd writing English names for such a
widget, and its result kept only when it draws whole. A field whose
font holds the names keeps them, and scripts otherwise still print the
date language.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Forms: an English weekday before the month keeps the month (#5303)
With Italian dates, "Tue 17 Mar 2026" in a "ddd d mmm yyyy" field read
as no date: the language's names were found in the text, but not
English ones, so "Tue" left the format's weekday unfilled and "Mar",
which Italian shares between Tuesday and March, was taken as the
weekday. Both AFDate parsing and util.scand lost the month, and
Spanish, Romanian and Albanian ("mar") did the same. English names are
now found too and fill their field of the format as localized ones do.
A test reads English and mixed weekdays before the month in those
languages.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Forms: an English date run is drawn even when it prints the value (#5303)
A Helvetica field storing "18-Oct-26" whose Format script prints it
again as dd-mmm-yy still showed "18-???.-26" in Russian. The English
run printed "18-Oct-26", but it was dropped for equalling the stored
value, which was how a failed run was told apart: a failing script
handed back the value unchanged. The English run now says whether it
ran (`None` when the script failed or the runner can't write English
dates), and what it made is drawn whenever it draws whole. A test
reprints the stored value under Russian, and checks that a failing
script keeps its text and is reported undrawn.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Forms: a short weekday typed without its dot is the weekday (#5303)
With French dates, "mar 6 janv 2026" in a "ddd d mmm yyyy" field read
as no date through util.scand, and "mar 06/01/2026" in "ddd dd/mm/yyyy"
through AFDate too. French writes Tuesday as "mar.", which a name
search only found with its dot; since English names are found as well,
the English "Mar" (March) was the only name of that length, so the
weekday became a month. Romanian "mar" did the same. A short name
ending in a dot is now also found typed without it, as the same kind of
name, so the format's order of name fields decides between it and an
equal name of the other kind. Both copies of the name search change. A
test reads French and Romanian weekdays typed without their dot.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Forms: a shared name is the month when no weekday is typed (#5303)
With Italian dates, "17 mar 2026" in a "ddd d mmm yyyy" field read as
no date, nor did "mar 17, 2026" in "dddd, mmmm d, yyyy". AFDate leaves
weekdays out of what it reads (they are shown, not typed), but the name
search still expected the format's weekday first, so "mar", which
Italian shares between Tuesday and March, filled it and left no month.
Spanish and Albanian "mar" and Albanian "sht" (Saturday, September) did
the same, and the keystroke check refused those dates. Where such a
read finds no date, the names are now read again with no weekday
expected, so the shared name is the month; a typed weekday still comes
first ("mar 17 mar 2026"). util.scand reads its fields in order and
needs the weekday, so it is unchanged. A test types those dates with the
weekday left out.

* Forms: Turkish names typed in capitals are read (#5303)
With Turkish dates, "1 MAYIS 2026" and "1 EKİM 2026" in a d mmmm yyyy
field read as no date through AFDate and util.scand, and "SALI 6 OCAK
2026" through util.scand. Names were compared lower-cased, which turns
I into i, not the dotless ı of "Mayıs" and "Salı", and İ into i with a
combining dot above, which "Ekim" doesn't have. Names and typed text
are now folded alike, the capital I and the dotted and dotless i all as
i and the combining dot dropped, one piece for each char so positions
in the text stay aligned: in both copies of the name search, the AFDate
month reader and util.scand's name matcher. English reads as before. A
test types Turkish names in capitals and English ones as a check.

* Forms: Greek names typed in capitals are read again (#5303)
Folding names char by char turned a capital Σ into σ, so "ΙΑΝΟΥΆΡΙΟΣ"
no longer matched "Ιανουάριος", whose last letter is the final ς. The
fold now makes ς a σ on both sides, in the forms and JS parsers alike.

* A comment's text, border or line, and fill each at an opacity of its own
Comment Properties showed one opacity for a whole comment, so a text box's
see-through background took its text and border with it, and a rectangle
marking an area on a plan couldn't have an opaque line over a faint fill.
Now a text box, typewriter text or callout has a Text, Border and Fill
opacity, a rectangle, oval, polygon or cloud a Line and Fill opacity (a part
not drawn is greyed); everything else keeps one Opacity.
The line's stays /CA, the fill's is /ca (PDF 2.0's opacity for what is
filled) and the text's /PCTextOpacity, each only where it differs from the
one it would follow, and the appearance draws them with /GS0 (strokes at the
line's, fills at the fill's) and /GS1 for the text, so every viewer shows
them. The quick bar's Opacity and StyleAnnotation's set the whole comment's.
Engine: Style::{fill_opacity, text_opacity}, Edit::PartOpacity,
annot::{set_part_opacity, appearance::part_opacity}, Props::{fill_opacity,
text_opacity}. Make Properties Default and the settings carry the parts.
Headless: comment_add / comment_edit fill_opacity, text_opacity; comment_list
reports opacity, fill_opacity, text_opacity. Four labels in every catalog
(AI-assisted translations from English, noted in ATTRIBUTION.toml).

* Review: the text's opacity slider shows what the text is drawn at; comment_list skips replies' properties; ui-parity's change record
A text box without fill and border whose text kept an opacity of its own showed the border's
in its Text opacity slider; it now shows the text's, and a change sets the whole comment's.
The opacity sliders are named by their labels. comment_list reads a comment's properties only
for comments, not for every reply.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Rebase: comment_list tells replies by is_reply, as main now threads them
main threads replies by their /IRT reference (#4061); the opacity fields skip a reply the
same way.

* Review: a text-only text box made default gives the tool its text's opacity
With neither a border nor a fill, a text box's text is the whole comment:
Comment Properties shows its drawn opacity (the text's own, when set), and a
change there sets the whole comment's. Make Properties Default, and the
context menu's Make Current Properties Default, stored /CA instead, so a
text box whose text was at 50 % gave the tool 100 %. The default is now the
text's drawn opacity in that case.

Merge origin/main. Conflicts: docs/changelog headers keep both histories;
edit/run.rs keeps EnhanceScan beside main's run_edit_page_image; optimize
images.rs keeps main's scaled() and the crate-visible jpeg(); the German
strings in ui-egui/src/i18n/de.tsv go with that file, which main moved to
craft-i18n. decode_samples now takes main's ImageBudget; a scan clean-up
run shares one sized by the file.
Review (CodeRabbit, scan_clean.rs): a page whose own images and a
scan-holding Form only together cover it now cleans the images and reports
the Form; a page whose images alone cover it reports its Form too. New
regression fails on the old classification.
* M11: JBIG2 images share a symbol dictionary, up to 16 at a time
With Monochrome Images set to JBIG2, Optimize stored each image's
letters in a symbol dictionary of its own, so a document of N pages
carried its font's shapes N times. Now up to 16 images the run stores
as JBIG2 share one dictionary in a /JBIG2Globals stream, holding the
marks found in more than one of them; each image's text regions refer
to it first, then to a dictionary of its own for the marks only it
repeats. An image is stored that way when it comes out smaller, and a
group only when what its images save is more than the globals take.
- filters: encode_jbig2_shared codes a group: the globals are a symbol
dictionary segment numbered 0 and associated with no page (7.2.6);
each page numbers its segments from 1, as a segment refers only to
lower numbers (7.2.5), and the shared symbols' IDs come first, as the
dictionaries are referred to in that order (Table 31, SBSYMS). At
most 16,383 shared marks, those in the most images, so a page keeps
room for its own under the decoder's 32,767.
- optimize: the run holds the 1-bit samples of the images it stores as
JBIG2 (16 at most, 64 MiB at most) and stores them again sharing,
weighing each with the longest reference the globals could have.
Eight pages of 10 pt text rendered at 300 dpi take 41% less in
Helvetica and 42% in Times than coded alone, 10% in Courier, and 46%
in Helvetica at 600 dpi; groups of 2, 4, 16 and 32 save 19%, 33%, 45%
and 47%. Redacting one image stores the others of its group again
without the dictionary, so 16 keeps that to 15 images.

* M11: test what the mutants found untested in shared JBIG2 dictionaries
- filters: the group goes through encode_jbig2_shared, which refuses it
for an image the encoder refuses; two marks in common are enough to
share; past the 65,536 distinct marks a group holds, a mark first seen
later isn't shared while those held count every image.
- optimize: optimizing again keeps both the shared pages and the pages
coded alone as they are; under Retain, averaged JBIG2 pages share
nothing; a last group of two shares.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01AmsdeUCdTaD72jkDw2pJKY
* M11: only images redaction can store again share a JBIG2 dictionary
Redacting one image of a group stores the others again without the
dictionary, which can hold the shapes of marks under the area, and
refuses the redaction for one it can't: it takes image masks and
images of one component as its own reading counts them (no DeviceN,
the family named directly), and at most 64 Mi pixels. Optimize took
DeviceN of one colourant and up to 80 million pixels, so such an image
in a group made any redaction of the others fail, where before it was
coded alone and the same redaction worked (the Consumers review).
Only an image mask or a DeviceGray image named directly, of at most
2^26 pixels, now joins a group; others are coded alone. An engine test
optimizes three pages, two DeviceGray and one DeviceN, and redacts the
first: the DeviceN page stays alone, the second is stored again, and
no image names the dictionary after a save.

* M11: optimize and redaction share one limit on the images redaction stores again
The second Consumers review: Optimize's limit on images that share a
JBIG2 dictionary copied redaction's private 64 Mi, with nothing tying
the two, so a lower one in redaction would bring back refused
redactions with no test going red. Both now read
pdfcraft_cos::MAX_REDACTED_IMAGE_PIXELS. The engine test adds an image
mask, the other kind that shares, so a redaction that stopped storing
either kind again fails it. doc_optimize's description, the README,
the parity note and ROADMAP say which images share (named directly).

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01AmsdeUCdTaD72jkDw2pJKY
* M11: a JBIG2 group is coded before its samples would pass the limit
CodeRabbit on #5910: hold added an image to the group and then checked
SHARED_BYTES, so a group could pass the 64 MiB it is documented to stay
within by its last image, which can itself be up to 64 MiB (an image
that shares has at most 2^26 pixels, and as its rows are whole bytes,
at most that many bytes; a 1-pixel-wide one takes them all). hold_in
codes the group first when an image would take it past the limit, and
after when it has 16 images; with room for 10 bytes, images of 4 go two
to a group, where the old order made one of 12. CodeRabbit's follow-up
too: the 18-image test decodes every image and compares it with its
samples, across the boundary between the groups.

* optimize: count the globals' object framing; filters: test the shared coder's size limit
- A JBIG2 group shares a dictionary only when it saves more than the
globals' dictionary and data plus NEW_OBJECT (96 bytes: the object's
framing, its xref entry, and an encrypted file's IV and padding), so a
group that saves less than that no longer makes the file larger.
- encode_jbig2_shared is Unsupported for an image taller than the
decoder takes and codes one at the bound.

bookmark_export returns an outline, or one bookmark's subtree, as JSON:
titles, nesting, open state, colour, bold/italic and destinations as page
plus view in PDF user space (ISO 32000-2 12.3.2.2), optionally written to
a file. bookmark_import takes it back, inline or from that file, under any
bookmark at any position or in place of the outline, as one undoable edit;
bookmark_copy does the same from another open document by page number.
A bookmark whose page the target lacks keeps its place without a
destination and is reported in `unmapped`. Every node is checked before
anything is written (title, page, colour, view type and arity, 33 levels,
100,000 bookmarks), and the error names the node.

pdfcraft-annot reads a page's 3D annotations and the model each shows:
the /3DD stream, or the stream a /3DRef names (at most four deep, so a

pdfcraft-engine exposes both on Document.
The automation tool model3d_render picks a page's Nth 3D model, parses
PRC with pdfcraft-prc, assembles and frames it with pdfcraft-prc-render
from a chosen direction (default an isometric-style view, Z up), and
returns the image as a PNG. U3D gives an error until a decoder lands.

* M11: Optimize runs when a category it discards holds nothing
PDF Optimizer's Discard Objects ticks pass their categories to
remove_hidden, which refuses a run that removes nothing. Ticking "Discard
bookmarks" on a file without bookmarks, or doc_optimize with such a
discard, ended the whole optimization with "there are no redaction marks
to apply". An empty category is now nothing discarded.

* M8: doc_remove_hidden says when the listed categories hold nothing
Its error came from remove_hidden's refusal: "there are no redaction marks
to apply". It now checks the scan first, as redact_apply checks for marks,
and says there is nothing to remove. The scan counts what removal takes
(an AcroForm with no fields as 1), so the check refuses only what the
removal would. The tool description says it fails then.
The tool test also runs doc_optimize discarding categories that hold
nothing, end to end.

* M11: Optimize passes remove_hidden only the ticked categories that hold something
Catching remove_hidden's refusal kept a copy it may have changed: with
bookmarks ticked it drops an empty outline root before counting nothing,
and its own documentation says to drop such a copy. The optimizer now
scans first and passes only the ticked categories the scan finds something
in, and with none doesn't call it, so an empty outline root stays, as
Remove Hidden Information leaves it.
Corrects 278a588bf's message: the ticks are under Discard Objects and
Discard User Data, and hidden text is one of them.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01AmsdeUCdTaD72jkDw2pJKY
* M8: doc_remove_hidden reads one scan, and says why it can't edit
A document that can't be edited has no scan, so the check read every
category as empty and said the listed ones hold nothing; the reason it
can't be edited comes through again. The check and the count of what was
removed now share the one scan the tool took already.
Corrects ada2a1ccb's message: the removal also takes what its scan counts
as 0 (an empty outline root); what the check matches is that the removal
refuses when its scan counts every listed category as 0.

* M11: the optimizer test discards a category that holds something
Mutants of the category filter survived: no test ticked a category that
holds something, or an empty one beside an unticked one that does. A page
with a comment and no bookmarks, discarding both, discards the comment
and only it.

* M11: Optimize passes every ticked category, and keeps the copy from before a refusal
c7c018ac6 passed remove_hidden only the ticked categories its scan finds
something in. But with form fields ticked, discarding hidden text also
takes the hidden text the flattened appearances bring onto the page,
which no scan before flattening counts, so with Flatten form fields and
Discard hidden text ticked, the hidden text was dropped from the list and
stayed in the file, where main removes it.
Every ticked category goes to remove_hidden again, as on main. When it
refuses (every category counts 0), it may have changed the copy (an
empty outline root goes with bookmarks, and then it refuses), so the copy
from before the call is kept and nothing is discarded. That also drops
the extra scan c7c018ac6 added.
Corrects c7c018ac6's message: remove_hidden counts first, then drops an
empty outline root, then refuses.

Before PDF 2.0, PRC in a 3D stream is an Adobe extension to PDF 1.7, so a
PRC model added to a file below 2.0 now declares /Extensions /ADBE at
BaseVersion 1.7, ExtensionLevel 1, keeping other extensions and a later
ADBE level, and leaving an /ADBE that is not a dictionary (an array of
them) alone (ISO 32000-2 §7.12). U3D and 2.0 files are unchanged.

A new `model_add` automation tool and `Edit::AddModel3d` embed a U3D or
PRC file as a 3D annotation (ISO 32000-2 13.6.2) in a chosen rectangle:
- The model goes into a Flate-compressed 3D stream (13.6.3) with /Type /3D
and /Subtype U3D or PRC, read from the file's header (`U3D` and a zero
byte, or `PRC`); anything else is refused before the document changes.
Models over 256 MiB (MAX_MODEL_BYTES) are refused. model_add checks the
file's size (from the file system) and its header before reading the
rest, so a large file that is not a model is never loaded; the path goes
through the read root, and `read_model` joins the helpers the
file-access test knows take a resolved path.
- /3DD references the stream, so the annotation has its own instance.
- /3DA states /A: click (XA, the standard's default and the tool's),
page_open (PO) or page_visible (PV).
- /AP /N is the poster readers print and show before activation: a chosen
image or PDF page fitted inside the box keeping its shape and centred (the
custom-stamp picture path: `mark_source`, `fit_picture`, and the stamp's
placement matrix now shared as `appearance::picture_place`), or, with no
picture, a light frame labelled "3D model". It is drawn in user space and
not counter-rotated, so on a page with /Rotate it turns with the page, as
the model does.
- /Contents carries the name (the file stem by default) as the alternate
description (12.5.2).
- A document older than the model needs gets /Version in its catalog
(7.7.2): 1.6 for U3D, 1.7 for PRC, as the optimizer does for JBIG2.
Adobe's extension level for PRC in 1.7 is not written.
- The 3D rectangle has its own MAX_MODEL_SIDE (14400 pt).
The edit is undoable ("Add 3D model"), needs the comments permission and
rebuilds only the comments view. A new parity entry, misc.3d-add, is
partial: no poster rendered from the model, no views (/VA, /3DV), no
replacing the poster, no UI command, no /Extensions. misc.3d-view is
unchanged. ROADMAP.md progress log line.

A soft mask is placed by the CTM in force when its `gs` runs (ISO 32000-2
11.6.5.2). The paragraph lifted over the scan re-selects the graphics state
after its own `cm`, so a mask selected before a translation landed
translated with it and could hide the new text. A re-emitted state that
carries a dictionary /SMask now records its anchor CTM and is selected
there: `cm` to the anchor, `gs`, `cm` back.
The test edits the same paragraph with and without a mask and requires the
same ink; it fails with the re-anchoring disabled (the mask lands 100 pt
right and the text vanishes). Both rewrite paths.

`ImageBudget::decode` is now the one public way to decode an image's
CCITT fax or JBIG2 data: `Document::decoded_image` and
`decoded_image_within`, which decoded with no limit on the work, are
test-only in pdfcraft-cos, and pdfcraft-filters exports only
`decode_ccitt_within` and `decode_jbig2_within`, which spend from a
caller's allowance (`decode_jbig2` is gone, `decode_ccitt` private).
So an operation over many images can't decode them without sharing an
allowance; the compiler holds new callers to it. Doctests that must not
compile check both crates; with the old entry points public they fail.
Tests outside the crates decode through an unlimited ImageBudget.
Streams in general (`Stream::decoded`) are left for a follow-up.
- Add Freehand-Highlight tool with 100pt line width support, Lucide highlighter icon, and PDF Multiply blending.
- Add customizable floating and docked hotbar with command picker, size slider, full-side strip chrome integration, and settings gear icon anchored at the bar end.
- Add left/right docking options for the navigation rail with toggle button and preferences setting.
The test timed the 100-field form three times, then the 800-field form
three times, and compared the best of each. A busy spell on a shared
runner that fell on the second half slowed only the large form, and the
ratio went past 16x (16.6x on a gate run) though it is about 7x.
Each of five rounds now opens the small form and then the large one, and
the best round's ratio is checked against the same 16x, after one
untimed opening of each. With the values filled one by one again (the
quadratic code before #4638) it still fails, at about 48x.
Document the existing policy: mixed plain and target-script text normalizes to that script, then to plain text, rather than reconstructing the original mixture. Undo restores exact prior text. Cover both scripts in engine and headless tool tests, including document-byte restoration, redo and save/reopen, and record the evidence in parity. The new tests pass against unchanged conversion logic; this is policy documentation and coverage, not a product behavior fix. Scoped Linux native, wasm, clippy, formatting, layers, assets and parity validation passed.

Each `Do` copied the page's `/XObject` dictionary, and each form its `/Resources`, `/Properties`,
`/Font` and `/ExtGState`, or the resources it was drawn with if it had none. So Office export of one
page took time in the square of what it drew: 31 s for 10,000 pictures, about 70 ms of it decoding, 30
s for 10,000 forms with no `/Resources`, and 16 minutes for one form with 100,000 keys in them drawn
50,000 times, in a test build.
`FormCall` keeps the form and `resource_dict` reads a dictionary where it is, with an object of its
own held. 10,000 pictures take about 0.15 s now, 10,000 forms 79 ms, and that form drawn 5,000 times 40 ms. The test holds to 10,000 pictures, not the 2,000 it could afford.
A `gs` reads a direct graphics state in place too, in the text walk and in `page_background`, and a
value of the wrong type isn't copied to find that out. A form that sets a font still reads the font each time it is drawn, as the fonts read
are kept only for that draw: 3.5 ms a draw for one of 100,000 widths.

none of the others has a form in it. Before, one character with no Unicode
form (a space, q, H in H2O) kept the range from ever counting as converted,
so the second click converted again, changed nothing, and the text could not
be toggled back.

Restore main's text where the PR changed things it did not need to:
intra-doc links turned into plain code spans (engine js.rs and
camera_edges.rs, forms raster.rs, fonts pdf.rs, sign keys.rs and
pkcs12.rs, ui-egui motion.rs and web_print.rs), the #[allow(dead_code)]
on render's byte_capacity and ui-egui's unit_for_tag (both are used on
every native target, as on main), the loosened combine_grid timings, the
forms test case rename (scratch() already numbers its folders), and the
computed xref size in a_recovered_page_tree_survives_a_full_save (always
5 there).

discover charged each candidate's size against the 64 MiB budget before
reading it, so proprietary or broken files early in a fonts folder could
use the budget up and hide openly licensed fonts after them. Charge only
fonts that pass validation and are not duplicates. Reads are still
bounded: every file read counts against four times the budget.

- page_image_at: PageImage::contains already requires the point inside
visible_rect (rect clipped by the placement clip), so the extra bounds
test before it decided nothing.
- image_dimensions: the 256 MB input-length guard repeated the caller's;
the decoder's max_alloc limit still caps what decoding allocates. Its
test no longer allocates 256 MB to hit that guard.
- font_content_key hashed every font file twice; one 64-bit hash plus the
length is enough to tell duplicate files apart.

run_edit_page_image carried its own inverse, bbox and multiply; Matrix
already has invert, bbox and then with the same formulas and the same
degenerate-determinant guard. Also drop the second finite check on Move
(checked on entry), match the added item with two finds instead of a
four-way chain, and toggle flips in one place for both the parallel and
perpendicular cases. No behaviour change.

Brings the branch up to date with main (47f42ba0), which moved 37 commits since
the merge base, including page-edge shadows (#2088), full rewrite after page
delete (#4279) and the licence-check stage (#2212). No conflicts.

The allowance's sharing was tested on a few images. This runs a whole page through the export: the
pictures past it are left out and counted, and the page is listed, which is what the warning goes
by. A few large pictures all come through. The README gives the numbers.

Storing LZW streams with Flate decoded image streams outside the allowance,
with a limit for each stream and no total, and nothing asked whether to go
on: a 593 KB file of 100 images took 113 s with none refused, and images
refused by the image pass were still rewritten. The pass now pays for what
it decodes and for storing and checking it, at 8 steps a byte since Flate
takes up to 78 ns a byte, and streams past that stay LZW.
An image is counted as refused only when it stayed as it was: one packed
before the allowance ran out on its second read was rewritten. doc_reduce
reports images_refused as doc_optimize does, and the app's action says so
in its log. A refused image no longer reads as an unsupported filter:
FilterError::Spent says what happened.

- [P1] Arrange: track and replay inherited non-ExtGState drawing state (colors, line widths, etc.) across q/Q scopes for stencil and form artwork
- [P2] Flips: route ImageEdit::Flip through coordinate-aware transform logic to swap axes when rotated at odd quarter turns (90°/270°)
- [P2] Rotation knob: measure clockwise angle delta from drag start relative to the rotated image center to prevent reapplying existing angle
- [P2] Format panel: connect superscript/subscript controls to line editor and content draft selections, and update parity evidence
